The Savage Tides
Notes on the Orcish Language
An excerpt from “Proliferation of the Languages of the Flaneass”
There are many misconceptions about the Orcish language, the most common of which is that it is relatively uncomplicated compared the languages of the races of Man and Elf. Which is true to a point, seeing how the tongue has very few words concerning concepts such as “Love”, “Forgiveness”, or “Scholarship”. Orc invective, insults, and curses however, run very inventive and, more often then not, extremely graphic in nature. This, as well as the fact that many half orcs take up the sailing profession to escape the prejudices of either parent, means that many sailors of the Azure Sea and beyond know at least a few select orcish insults. Some of note are “Tol’merekcack Grib”, or “You fornicate with goblins” and “Crikmorvar” which is “pointy eared flower eater”. Perhaps the worst I encountered during my interviews of sailors among the docks of Irongate however, was “Vel’korkash”, which translates to “one who lusts after his own sister, but was beaten up for making the attempt”. I am told that much is lost in the translation, and it is almost certain death to say this to an orc’s face.
